The 5 Best Investing Podcasts to Listen to In 2021

You probably can’t watch a TV show while you’re biking. Nor can you play a video game as you’re looking at groceries. A listening device and some earbuds, though, can follow you anywhere.

Whether you’re in your home, on a walk, in your car, at a store or at any number of other places, it’s easy as can be to put in your headphones and listen to the latest episodes of your favorite podcast.

Podcasts aren’t only good entertainment, but also great education. The time you’d normally spend doing those mindless chores or exercising can be used to help you prepare for the next phase of your career.

Whether you want to learn about the entertainment industry, applied sciences, theme parks or any number of other things, there’s a podcast out there to teach you.

Unlike audiobooks, in which an author narrates a story, podcast episodes generally consist of conversations between two or more individuals. That back-and-forth has a lot of advantages over the typical one-person narration found in books on tape.

A conversation often feels more natural then someone telling you a story. You get to hear people bounce off each other and build off of what the others said. A podcast isn’t as structured as a book, so it has more opportunities for interesting tangents and divergences that make the listening more unpredictable.

If you’re looking for financial and investing podcasts, these are the ones you need to be listening to in 2021, ranked.

2) MapleMoney Show

Tom Drake is a financial analyst for a grocery retailer by day who shares personal financial education by blogging and podcasting. MapleMoney addresses topics like investing, side hustles, financial independence and debt.

Weekly episodes, 137 to be exact, are always something to look forward to. Episodes are on the shorter side, averaging about 25 minutes per episode.

3) Because Money

Chris Enns (Rags to Reasonable) and Sandi Martin (Spring Financial Planning) are fee-only financial planners, while John Robertson is a scientist who has developed a passion for teaching people how to invest (The Value of Simple). They talk about real-life money matters involving parenthood, divorce and ageing parents, as well as financial planning and investing with financial industry insiders. With 85 episodes and a 4.6 star rating, this is podcast to keep on the radar, although their sixth season is halted due to the coronavirus.

4) Canadian Couch Potato

Dan Bortolotti started his career as a journalist and has written extensively for MoneySense. His Canadian Couch Potato portfolio is hugely popular with do-it-yourself investors. He joined PWL Capital in Toronto to work directly with investors and is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Chartered Investment Manager (CIM).

His podcast focuses on investing in exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and offers answers to questions submitted by readers of his blog and listeners of his podcast.

With only 26 episodes which are spaced relatively far apart from one another, these relatively rare episodes are ones to listen in to. Being over an hour long, there is tons of content.

5) Young Money

Tracey Bissett, Founder of Bissett Financial Fitness and award winning Financial Literacy Champion, gives you the straight goods each week to set yourself up for financial success. As a former executive at TD Bank, one of Canada's Big 5 Banks, Tracey has worked with and in support of thousands of individuals and entrepreneurs to secure the financing they needed.

With 180 episodes, there is a lot to listen to, but episodes can range from 10-30 mins.

The Bottom Line

Like social media, podcasting gives listeners direct access to the thoughts and perspectives of the people they look up to. While the process of listening is getting easier, the process of choosing podcasts is getting harder. The sheer number of podcasts these days can make it difficult and overwhelming to know where to start.

If you are looking for financial and investing podcasts, these are the ones you should listen to this year.
